How to get to Versailles from Paris
Versailles sits about 20 km south-west of central Paris. There are three sensible ways to make the trip, and the right one depends less on budget than on how many of you there are and how early you want to be at the gates.

The practical difference shows up at the end of the day rather than the start. After six or seven hours on your feet across the estate, the walk back to the RER and a rush-hour train into Paris is the part most visitors remember badly.
When to go, and when not to
The estate is closed on Mondays. That pushes an unusual crowd into Tuesday, which is consistently the busiest day of the week — worth avoiding if you have any flexibility.
The palace opens at 9 a.m. Arriving in the first half-hour, before the coach groups reach the State Apartments, changes the experience more than any ticket upgrade. If you can only come in the afternoon, start with the gardens and the Trianon estate and work back towards the palace as the morning crowds thin.
Tickets: what to book before you leave Paris
Book online and in advance, whatever your plan. Entry to the palace is by timed slot, and same-day slots are routinely gone by mid-morning in season. The Passport ticket covers the palace, the Trianon estate and the gardens, which is what most first-time visitors actually want.
The gardens are free on most days, but not when the Musical Fountains Shows are running — typically weekends from spring to autumn, when a separate ticket applies. Check the estate's own calendar before assuming a free afternoon in the gardens.
How much of the estate can you see in a day?
More than you think, if you accept that you will not see everything. The State Apartments and Hall of Mirrors take about ninety minutes. The gardens deserve two hours at a walking pace. The Trianon palaces and Marie-Antoinette's Hamlet are a further two, and they sit a good twenty-minute walk from the main palace — the part of the day where a car waiting at the gate makes a visible difference to what you can fit in.
